Get Lucy Hale’s Navy Cat Eye From the Billboard Music Awards

Not only is Lucy Hale one of our favorite “Pretty Little Liars,” but the gorgeous actress (and Mark ambassador) is also a budding singer, so naturally she was at the Billboard Music Awards last night. While there were a lot of great fashion moments on the red carpet (um, J.Lo’s sheer Donna Karan dress) the beauty wasn’t as breathtaking – but one gorgeous and fun look was Lucy’s fresh pink lip, side-swept hairstyle and navy smokey eye (to coordinate with her dress of course).

Her makeup artist, Vanessa Scali, gave us the details on the look. Since it was a rock-n-roll event in Las Vegas, Scali wanted to have some fun with the makeup, opting for navy cat eyes, peachy-golden cheeks and a “pop of pink on the lips” to give a spin on this overall fresh look. Learn how to get the entire look below!

Face
“Lucy has nearly flawless skin, so I used foundation and concealer sparingly. First, I used the Tom Ford Traceless Foundation only where needed and blended in with my fingers. I find that using my fingers to blend foundation heats the product just a bit and leaves a seamless finish. Next, I applied Giorgio Armani Maesto Eraser Concealer under the eyes and on the inner hollow (on the nose) just beside the inner corner of the eyes.”

Cheeks
“I applied mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Cheeky to the apples of the cheeks, blending outward toward the cheekbones. Then, I layered with a swirl of mark Island Beauty Compact under the cheekbones, blending up and in toward the apples of her cheeks. The combination of buttery textures and soft, shimmery colors blend to make the face look sun kissed and luminous. The layering gives it extra staying power – Vegas weather is in the triple digits today.”

Eye Shadow
“First, I applied the champagne shimmer shade [top left] from the mark On the Dot Palette Neutral all over her lid, blending off at the eyebrow and extending outward to elongate her eyes. Then I used the taupe shimmer [bottom left] in the crease of the eye and under her bottom lashes. Just a touch adds soft definition and bring out the color in Lucy’s eyes.”

Eye Liner
“Eye liner is the key to this look – it adds the color and edge that makes this eye look incredibly sexy. I lined her eyes (top) with mark No Place to Run Longwear Eyeliner in Navy Seal. The liner is applied thinner on the inside corner of the eye and gradually becoming thicker toward the outside corner of the eye. I extended the line past the natural line for the cat eye look. For added depth and edge, I lined the base of the lashes with mark On the Edge Hook Up Liquid Eyeliner in Cleo.

Mascara
“I love full, feathery lashes so I finished with a few generous coats of Lancôme Hypnose Drama in Excessive Black.”

Brows
“I shaped and extended her brows with Givenchy Show Powdery Eyebrow Pencil.”

Lips
“To balance the strong eye, I kept Lucy’s lips looking gorgeous and natural; I applied mark Make It Rich in Punch all over the lip and added a touch of mark Gloss Gorgeous in Lolli in the center of the lip.”

Compared to last year (ahem Mileygate), tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards was basically a snoozefest. We thought there was a chance that Nicki Minaj could have assumed Miley’s throne as the bullseye in the Parent’s Television Council’s target, but—despite her awkward wardrobe malfunction—the only real shocking thing that happened was Taylor Swift’s PG shimmying and shaking it off.

However, while we have tomorrow to gape at the show’s crazy moments, tonight is for talking about who wore what. 8 Celebs School Us on the Perfect Outdoor Selfie

$

0

No matter how experienced you are with the art of the perfect selfie, there’s no denying that direct sunlight poses a new problem. Should you pose in the shade or embrace the great outdoors and direct your lens into the sun? Then there’s the problem of makeup. Will the sun wash out your complexion? Never fear, summer babes, the outdoor selfie isn’t impossible—and we’ve got the proof on Instagram. Look to your favorite celeb and guaranteed, she’s mastered it. And now you can too. Follow these expert-approved tips for your next outdoor shoot—whether you’re at a music festival or spending the afternoon at the park with the pup.

1. Watch Your Light.

Instagram Photo

Before you pose, make sure the sun is behind you. “Sun shining directly at your face adds shadows and gives your selfie a washed out look,” says Casey Klein, a photographer and retoucher for Klein Captured Photography, “and it can even cause you to squint and wrinkle your face.” Not a good look. Proof that it works: Taylor Swift. See how she creates almost a halo around her face with the light.

2. Throwing Shade.

Instagram Photo

Shade sets a different mood for your selfie, says Klein, so feel free to play with your positioning. You can always brighten the image with a filter after. Anna Kendrick does this beautifully, keeping her face in the shade and the light focused on the landscape behind her.

3. Know Your Angles.

Instagram Photo

Hold the camera just slightly above your head. “Shooting down makes you raise your chin slightly, which is thinning and more flattering,” says photographer Dan Cumberland. It can also create a beautiful sun flare from behind, adds Klein. Nikki Reed and her friends show us how it’s done.

4. Try, Try Again.

Instagram Photo

Almost nobody is perfectly photogenic on the first try; it takes a lot of practice to find which poses and angles are the best for your face. “Don’t be afraid to try new angles and expressions to mix up your images,” says Klein. “You can take a ton of photos using your phone’s burst feature and record subtle movements to help you determine your best angles.” Who would have thought that a photo taken from above, neck tilted back, would look so cute? Lindsay Ellingson tried until she discovered it!

5. Be Smart With Makeup.

Instagram Photo

When choosing makeup, the only thing makeup artist Sandra Downie, and the founder of Sandra Downie Beauty, warns against is makeup with SPF. “If it’s already in your moisturizer or foundation, you can cause a double glare from the zinc that’s prevalent in many sunscreens.” Instead, she recommends applying a SPF powder, such as Brush On Block ($30) to give you sun protection without the fear of flashback. You can also do what Nina Dobrev does and protect yourself from the sun with a chic giant hat!

6. Keep it Natural.

Instagram Photo

When it comes to natural lighting, natural, barely-there, makeup is your best bet. “Darker makeup, especially around the eyes, can look harsh as the sun moves throughout the day and can cause shadows in places you may not desire them to be,” says Downie. Let us all look to Jourdan Dunn to see how the natural look is really done.

7. Highlight!

Instagram Photo

Ensure a dewy complexion over a greasy one with a touch of highlighter along the cheekbones, forehead, chin and bridge of the nose. “This especially looks good when you face the sun and tilt your head at an angle,” says Downie. “This results in a dewy, soft and romantic-looking photo.” Lucy Hale shows us the power of a gorgeously highlighted face; she literally looks lit from within.

8. #iwokeuplikethis

And when in doubt, don’t be afraid to go makeup-free like Demi Lovato. #nomakeupselfie #nofilter

Happy Monday! Now presenting: an only slightly voyeuristic look at what your favorite celebrities were up to this weekend. While we were cleaning our kitchens and walking the dog, Lucy Hale wore the best beauty look at the Teen Choice Awards and Julianne Hough spent a carefree day by the lake. Fortunately for us, they were willing to share it all on Instagram. Check it out—and come back next week to see even more of your faves getting their weekend on.

A rainbow cast over her hand, and “BYE” spelled out on her middle finger: we sense that Katy Perry is feeling kinda done with her Prismatic World Tour, which doesn’t end until October. Hang in there, Katy!

Bar Refaeli got her highlight on with makeup artist Miki Buganim. Superior genetics + perfectly placed highlighter = the luminous skin of our dreams.

Kim Kardashian was recently the subject of an absolutely stunning Cleopatra-inspired shoot with beloved celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath—and we guess Kim loved it, because why else would she take to Instagram to show off one of the photos from the editorial?

We’re somehow not surprised that Miley Cyrus would choose rainbow looks for both her fingers and toes.

Rihanna posted a cool shot of what we assume is her newest tattoo, which boasts the year she was born.

Kate Hudson celebrated National Left Handers Day (yep, it’s a thing) with a fun video that shows the lefty actress doing multiple activities that involve her left hand, including brushing on mascara.

Talk about major hair color envy—Nina Dobrev‘s new rich brown shade, complete with subtle highlights, is stunning.

We can’t get enough of the metallic blue smoky eye Lucy Hale wore to Sunday night’s Teen Choice Awards, especially that vibrant liner.

It was all glamour as usual for Lady Gaga, whose icy platinum shade is looking especially good paired with all those diamonds.

Julianne Hough showed off her post-day of sunbathing look sans makeup, sporting messy hair and serious summer vibes.

How to Wear Blue Eyeliner Like a Superstar

$

There’s no doubt about it: blue eyeliner is the hottest makeup trend around right now. Bold, fun and flattering, shades from aqua to navy have been popping up all over the red carpet this year—and after years of staid brown and grey, we couldn’t be happier to see a pop of oceanic color.

And good news: this trend is easier to pull off than you think. Here, 7 of our favorite celebs show us exactly how to wear blue eyeliner like a superstar.

lupita nyong'o blue eyeliner

Photo: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

You don’t have to be a straight-up goddess like Lupita to rock electric blue liner. The trick to making this bold look work? Limiting your liner. Keep the color on the top lid only, making sure you get it as close to your eyelashes as possible, then balance it out with black or dark blue pencil eyeliner along your lower waterline. And if you want to try this look specifically, we recommend Lancome Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in Sapphire ($27, Lancome), a gorgeously creamy formula intense enough to flatter every skin tone and eye color.

emily blunt blue eyeliner

Photo: George Pimental/WireImage

For a softer, elegant look like Emily Blunt, use a grey-blue eyeliner and trace a dramatic cat eye shape on your upper lid. The, using a small brush or even a cotton swab, blend the blue liner so that you get a very soft, diffused look. To make this look really work, make sure you use a black liquid liner to trace along your lashline, smudging it into the blue a little for an ombre effect. Bonus: layering your liners this way also makes your lashes look extra thick!

zoe kravitz blue eyeliner

Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage

To add some edge to your look, reach for a sparkly aquamarine liner—like Zoe Kravitz did—and run it around your tearduct, blending it into the rest of your eye makeup so that it acts as a highlight. It’s the perfect way to add subtle interest to an otherwise classic smokey eye.

kerry washington blue eyeliner

Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

If you want to make a bolder statement with your blues, Kerry Washington shows us exactly how it’s done—her shimmery blue-green liner is blended across her upper lid, then traced along her lower lashline. Keeping the rest of her makeup simple is the key to making it it work.

khloe kardashian blue eyeliner

Photo: Donna Ward/Getty Images

Speaking of bold statements, Khloe Kardashian’s eye makeup is a stunning testament to trying something new. Her electric aqua liner—traced along her lower waterline and above her upper lashline—is balanced with major false lashes. We especially love how this compliments, rather than competes with, the ocean blue of her outfit.

lucy hale blue eyeliner

Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage

Lucy Hale has never met an awesome eye makeup look she didn’t love, and this gorgeous navy smoky eye is no exception. This is maybe one of the easiest blue eyeliner looks to pull off; the trick to making it work is keeping the upper line thick and the lower line oh-so-thin, then running a grey pencil liner along the waterline for balance.

emma stone blue eyeliner

Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

Emma Stone’s stunning turquoise liner look is still one of our favorite makeup moments of 2015—and any eye shape can pull it off. Line the upper and lower lash lines about a third of the way across with blue eyeliner, concentrate your mascara on those outer lashes, and voila! The easiest, most fun blue beauty look ever.

12 Beauty Secrets We Learned From Lucy Hale

Photo: Allen Berezovsky / Contributor / Getty Images

There’s a whole lot of secrets we know Lucy Hale wouldn’t share with us… mainly, everything that happens in the next installment of “Pretty Little Liars”—which is definitely our favorite guilty pleasure tv show. But the topic she will gladly talk about? Beauty—and the lady has a wealth of knowledge in this department. We had the chance to sit down for a breakfast with our favorite TV star, who is also the face of avon’s mark. cosmetics, to talk about her own personal beauty evolution, those eyebrows (duh), her all-time favorite products, and of course, a little bit about what Aria will look like five years in the future. Before you tune into ABC’s special flash-forward episode of PLL on November 24th, this is essential reading.

1. Haven’t caught up on “PLL” recently? No big deal. The new season will be a great jumping-off point.
“We’ve done a five-year time jump. So you get to figure out where the girls have gone to college, their new careers, new relationships, new wardrobe, new hair. And you get to figure out what happened during those five years. What’s great about it is that there are so many episodes of our show. We shot 150-something, so for people who don’t want to start from the beginning, you can actually start from the time-jump and not feel completely lost. We’re older. It’s still the classic feel of the show, it’s just a little more grown up.”

2. Aria will have a brand new look.
“It’s a lot more toned down. Aria was always the one that was very glamorous—you’re going through turmoil and you’ve got like lashes on! But now she’s a lot more natural, which I like.”

3. Lucy is all about her new short hair.
“I can’t even remember having long hair now. I miss having it to braid and do fun things. I can barley fit it in a ponytail now. I feel like short hair definitely suits me.”

4. She embraces her full brows… and we do, too.
“I was always the little girl with the unibrow. You go through the brow evolution and like now, I don’t do anything to them now; I finally found the shape that works for me. All I do is kind of fill them in a little bit. I’ve just had horror stories where either I over-pluck them or then finally, they grew back out and I let someone touch them and it was a disaster. So I was like, ‘I vow to never let anyone touch them again.’ It’s been a couple years now. Long live the big brows!”

5. Lucy can cover-up a zit like a pro.
I can cover up a zit like no one. I use a liquid eyeliner brush and I dip it in the concealer. I’m like OCD. I want no spots. I dip it in powder and then set it.”

6. She feels super confident in berry liptick—specifically, mark.’s Vixen Lipstick. ($11, avon.com)
I think it’s really more different than your standard red lip. Not that many people wear it. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve liked to do things that not that many people try.”

7. Lucy wants girls to embrace what makes them different. Solid beauty advice, no?
“I don’t think like young girls are told enough that what makes you different, makes you cool. I didn’t really feel like that when I was younger. I had big eyebrows and had braces and stuff, and I feel like that is unconventionally beautiful. But I wish girls would embrace their quirks a little bit more because I’ve always thought the stranger-looking people are the most beautiful, and obviously, the most confident as well.”

8. Elizabeth Taylor is one of her beauty icons.
“I’m into old school Elizabeth Taylor right now. It’s the brows. I love the classics. I love Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.”

9. She has a super low-maintenance beauty routine.
“My beauty routine when I don’t have to do anything—concealer where I need it, mascara, and lip balm—Lucas Paw-Paw balm from Australia. You have to special order it. Very low-maintenance. Just because I’m always getting made up. I love when you [Makeup Artist Kelsey Deenihan] do my makeup, but I’m not a fan of spending hours in the morning. I used to when I was a little girl going to school. When I was a little bit younger, I would wake up an hour and a half before and do my hair and do my makeup. I never believed when people were like, ‘Less is more. When you get older, you won’t care.’ Yeah, OK—but it’s really true, and I’m finally at that point where I’m like, ‘You’re right! Less is more.'”

10. The weirdest thing in her bag is almond butter.
“I have weird snacks. Like, I like Justin’s Almond Butter Packets. I have a couple phone cases. Vitamins. I always have a very large purse. I always have a phone charger. Every kind of mint or candy. I think the random almond butter packets is the kicker.”

11. Lucy’s vanity probably looks just like yours. No lie.
“I go through waves of being organized or wanting to clean through and place my lipsticks out and according to shapes. My everyday stuff is a mess—it’s all over my counter. But the stuff that I never touch and just look at, it’s pretty impeccable. It’s neatly put, but I’m overall a very mess person. I have to admit.”

12. Facials are her biggest beauty indulgence.
“I’m pretty loyal to my facialist. I’ve tried all different kinds of facial products. I have really sensitive skin. I’m acne-prone. I’ve struggled with my skin, so I have to keep it really basic. But the one thing I have to be consistent about is a facial every two weeks.”

Everyone Who’s Anyone Will Perform at the Billboard Music Awards This Sunday in Vegas

billboard awards performances 2016

Gilbert Carrasquillo/FilmMagic

Everyone knows that Kesha is playing this weekend at the Billboard Music Awards in Vegas because there has been so much brouhaha about her performance, and you probably heard that Justin Bieber is playing since everyone follows his every move, but what about the rest of the gang? What else can you look forward to this Sunday?

Honestly, kind of everyone. Performances are slated from RihannaBritney Spears; Madonna, who will honor Prince; Ariana Grande (whose new album just happened to totally coincidentally drop today); Demi Lovato; Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton (because they’re a package deal now); Meghan TrainorNick Jonas and Tove Lo; the artist who for some reason styles her name as P¡nk; Celine Dion; Fifth Harmony with Ty Dolla $ign; DNCE; Shawn Mendes; Troye Sivan; Lukas Graham; and the Go-Gos. And that’s just the entertainment. There are also approx. a million celebrity presenters.

Instagram Photo

Madonna teased her Prince tribute on Instagram this week with a throwback photo of herself captioned, “Looking ahead…………i see Rain in the forecast,” along with a bunch of Prince-inspired emojis. Wait, OMG—is she going to sing “Purple Rain”?? That would be so unexpected.

Instagram Photo

Kesha, of course, has been posting BBMA-related stuff to IG ever since yesterday, when it was announced that she’d be doing her “statement performance” this weekend after all. That whole thing is a very long story that features Dr. Luke as an obvious villain, but in case you’ve been Rip Van Winkling it and missed the whole thing, she basically got unceremoniously disinvited from the awards show and then was reinstated yesterday after she performed at a Ben Folds concert. Like we said, loooong story.

Instagram Photo

If a musician isn’t performing, they’re probably up for an award, unless they’re double-dipping like the Biebs, who’s up for the Top Artist award and will also play a “medley” of his new single “Company” with his major hit “Sorry.” Bieber is up against Drake, Taylor Swift, Adele and The Weeknd for the blue ribbon. Top female artist nominees include Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Adele, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez; top men candidates are Justin Bieber, Drake, Fetty Wap, The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran.

Celeb presenters include the mostly-female lineup of Heidi KlumJessica AlbaZendayaKristen Bell, Mila KunisRebecca RomijnIdina MenzelKate Beckinsale, Priyanka Chopra, Laverne Cox, Kelly Rowland, Kathryn HahnSerayahKeke Palmer, Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher (hey, why not?), Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell (again, why not?) Lucy Hale, Halsey, Lindsey Vonn and a small handful of men, including DJ Khaled (who will introduce his “brother” Justin Bieber) SealTyrese Wiz Khalifa Steven Tyler Ashton Kutcher Pete Wentz and Mark Cuban.

The party live broadcast, hosted by Ciara and Ludacris, gets started at 8 p.m. EST on ABC, which makes us feel like this may or may not go into the wee hours of Monday morning, because that is an insane number of performers, and they also have to, like, give out awards, since that’s what the BBMAs were originally created for. All very exciting, though—can’t wait! 🎉

Lucy Hale Looks Totally Different as a Blonde

After seven seasons of playing raven-haired Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, it makes sense that Lucy Hale would be ready for a hair change. And so off to celebrity hair color guru Kristin Ess she went, now that the series has wrapped and she’s free to embrace her inner (and now outer) blonde. “Back to the blonde life,” she posted.

Since it takes a village, celeb hair stylist David Stanwell and makeup artist Allan Avendaño also got in on the new look, each posting shots of their client in all her newly blonde glory. “Little #BTS with this hottie,” Stanwell posted, while Avendaño marveled at Hale’s versatility. “She literally can wear anything and look perfect,” he wrote.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Hale debuted her new ‘do at the PLL wrap party, rocking burgundy lipstick and freshly styled locks.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Hale has gone on the record to discuss her love of short hair, so it’s unlikely she’ll be growing it out anytime soon. “I feel like I should’ve always had short hair—I can’t imagine life with long hair anymore,” she told Refinery 29 earlier this year. “It definitely shortens the amount of time it takes me to get ready. I think it reflects my personality pretty perfectly. [Short hair] is harder to style, though, surprisingly. I haven’t quite mastered it.” But when you have Stanwell around, you don’t have to, amirite?

We might, however, see her trying out a bolder hair color someday. “I’ve always wanted to do a crazy hair color,” she told the publication. “Like dye it purple or something, which I might do one day.” Perhaps she’ll start small—rose gold, anyone?

It’s a wonder that Lucy Hale’s hair is still attached to her head, considering that she seems to dye it approximately once a month. Last time we checked, she’d caved to the siren song of blonde, showing off a decidedly lighter look on Instagram, courtesy hair goddess Kristin Ess. Actually, Ess must be some sort of hair genie, because Hale is now rocking a fall-appropriate burnt-caramel look, and all we can say is: 😍. Also, 😋. And, why not, 🤑.

Ess shared her CliffsNotes on the style, revealing to her followers how they can attempt to recreate Hale’s honeyed hair at a salon near them. First of all, obey the first commandment of hair salon etiquette: Never show up empty handed. “Always a pic!!” Ess wrote. As to what to ask for specifically: “A warm auburn brown base w amber toned highlights” should do the trick, she wrote.

Not only is Hale’s hair firmly attached to her head after all of these changes, it’s healthy AF. And though she passionately extolled the benefits of short hair not long ago, she now appears to be growing out her mane. “I can’t even remember having long hair now,” she told us last year. “I miss having it to braid and do fun things. I can barely fit it in a ponytail now. I feel like short hair definitely suits me.”

Perhaps, but—good news, Lucy: Long hair does too. Blonde, brunette, amber-haired: Hale looks good no matter what she does with her hair. We’ll be over here at the sidelines, cheering her on. (And possibly booking a salon appointment ASAP to try this honeyed amber, TBD.)

We’re still in denial over the fact that 2016 is ending in three weeks (it’s OK—just breathe; we’ll get through this together), and that 2017 is about to hit us in the face with a whole set of new surprises, like what’s going to happen to Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, what color Kylie Jenner will dye her hair for the billionth time, and whether or not the country will devolve into a dumpster fire under the new president’s reign. (It’s like a reality show, but scarier!)
